Pest Control - Roaches
Cockroaches are mainly nocturnal, finding refuge in crevices and cracks during the day. They prefer hiding in areas with moist, warm and dark conditions. Their diet consists of almost anything that has nutritious value (including human food), as well as other items such as paper, excrement, glue, soap, toothpaste and leather. Cockroaches range in size from large to small, depending on the species.
Types of cockroaches
The American cockroach has a brownish-red colour, is about 3 to 4 cm in length and is the most common species found in the Western Cape. They are most often observed around human dwellings such as houses, grocery stores and restaurants, as well as in and around garbage disposal areas and sewers.
What differentiates this species of cockroach is its dark colour, being significantly darker in colour than its American and Australian counterparts.
The German cockroach averages about 1 - 2 cm in length and is amber-brown in colour. It is the smallest of all the cockroaches and is unable to fly. They prefer to live in damp and warm environments, and they are therefore often found around refrigerators, in kitchens, underneath sinks, in store rooms and in cupboards.
